ISDN - Integrated Services Digital Network

The integrated services digital network (ISDN) offers the customer digital transmission over the ordinary telephone service. ISDN offers the combination of voice and analog data together with digital data over the same network. This means, for example, that a customer may make telephone calls (or use a fax) while using the Internet.

You can have an ISDN service using two different types of connections. A basic rate connection provides users with two 64 kilobits per second (kbit/s) channels, which can be combined to make a 128 kbit/s channel. A primary rate connection provides users with up to thirty channels and allows data rates of up to approximately two megabits per second (2 Mbit/s).

A two channel basic rate connection enables two simultaneous services. For example, an ISDN customer can make:

  • two telephone calls at once;
  • one telephone call and one data call; or
  • just data calls.
